A man with a criminal record is accused of stabbing to death another man following an argument Saturday afternoon at a Mesa apartment complex, police said.
David Stokes was located and arrested the next morning at the complex at 1006 East Main St.
According to Mesa police Detective Steve Berry, Stokes and another man had been arguing at the apartment complex, and Stokes stabbed him.
Police said there were several witnesses to this crime, but neighbors say many of those witnesses were children. Lori Harrison says her 9-year-old granddaughter witnessed the slaying.
"It scared me," Harrison said. "It's a devastating thing for a child to have to go through."
Another child, 5 years old, was walking upstairs to get her doll when she said she saw the pair arguing. She said she was "blocked" by the victim's bloody body.
Stokes' girlfriend, who shares the apartment with him, was present at the time of the argument. Police said she told them the victim slapped her and Stokes became enraged.
Both men moved their quarreling outside. The girlfriend said when he exited the apartment, she saw the victim on the staircase bleeding, police said.
Although she was carrying a cell phone, she did not call for help, officers said.
Investigators from the medical examiner's office said the victim showed three separate stab wounds. One of the stab wounds was located near the victim's neck.
The victim's name has not yet been released.
