Phoenix woman killed, man hurt in Camp Verde crashPosted: Updated:
A Phoenix woman was killed and her passenger injured after the vehicle they were in crashed about 100 feet from a roadway along a hillside.
The Yavapai County Sheriff's Office identified the victim of Saturday evening's accident as Stephanie Steel, 30, the driver of the vehicle. The passenger, William Jordon, 36, was treated by paramedics and airlifted to John C. Lincoln Hospital in Phoenix.
The crash occurred on Fossil Creek Road, about 19 miles from Highway 260 in Camp Verde.
Jordon told deputies they had driven from Phoenix with the intention of camping at the Verde Hot Springs near the Child's campground.
He said that when road conditions became difficult, Steel was unable to prevent their vehicle from going over the side and crashing. He admitted neither one of them were wearing seatbelts, YCSO said.
Deputies said they found open beer cans in and around the vehicle at the crash site.
The investigation continues. Cause of death is pending the medical examiner findings.
Deputies are also interviewing witnesses who were in the area when the crash occurred.
Steel leaves behind four children, ages 13, 10, 8 and 6.
