CHANDLER, AZ (CBS5) -
A Chandler man missing since the weekend was found safe Wednesday morning by an Arizona Public Service worker west of Phoenix.
Donald Feiertag, 77, was discovered by his vehicle which had gotten stuck in the sand on a poorly maintained roadway near 543rd Avenue and Harquahala Road around 11 a.m., Chandler police said. It's an area that is just south of Interstate 10 and west of Tonopah.
He was conscious and coherent and taken to a local hospital for observation.
A granddaughter said Feiertag was badly dehydrated but otherwise in good health.
Sami Corrado said the family thinks he got stranded on Saturday as he was headed to Arizona City to shop, something he does about once a month. She said he also had lived in Arizona City with his wife.
Feiertag told his family that he had been in the car for five days and that he slept in the car, Corrado said. He also told them it was cold, but he had a jacket to help keep him warm.
Authorities told the family early this week they believed Feiertag could have turned off on a wrong road, leaving him stranded.
Feiertag was entered into a national police database as an overdue party.
