A fight between two inmates at the state prison in Florence Sunday morning had a deadly ending.

The victim, identified as Marcelo Gonzalez, 25, was serving an eight year sentence for burglary and second-degree escape convictions. He came to the Arizona Department of Corrections on Sept. 27, 2012.

Shortly after 8:31 a.m., while the inmates were in adjacent outdoor recreation enclosures, one of them created a small opening at the bottom of the fencing that separated the enclosures, prison officials said. The prisoner was attempting to get into the other inmate's area in order to commit an assault, DOC officials said.

Jonathan Williams, 24, is accused of killing Gonzalez. Williams is serving six and a half years for burglary. He came to ADC Dec. 8, 2010.

Officers restrained Williams and began life saving measures on Gonzalez, who was discovered lying facedown.

Williams told officers that he reacted to Gonzalez' actions in self-defense, DOC authorities said.

A criminal investigation is underway.

The unit is currently locked down.
