On Thursday January 30th, the moon moved between a NASA satellite and the moon.

This satellite is called the Solar Dynamic Observatory (SDO)

On board is a variety of instruments trained on the sun.

The SDO was able to capture the lunar transit on camera, sending the images back to Earth so we could watch the unusual sight live as it was happening.

Below is series of images from the SDO.

NASA says "The observatory watches the sun in many different wavelengths of light, which are each colorized in a different color"

According to SciTechDaily.com "a lunar transit happens two to three times each year. This one lasted two and one half hours, which is the longest ever recorded."
