Torrington Police: $10,000 in marijuana found during traffic stop.
TORRINGTON, CT (WFSB) -
More than $10,000 in marijuana was found during a traffic stop in Torrington early Thursday morning, according to police.
Police said Walter Domingo-Santiago, 41, of Waterbury, was stopped on East Main Street for going through a red light at the intersection with East Elm Street.
In addition to failing to obey the light, officers said Domingo-Santiago's Volkswagen Jetta nearly struck a marked police cruiser.
Once stopped, Domingo-Santiago failed a field sobriety test and was placed under arrest, police said. He refused to submit to a breath test.
When they secured the suspect's car, they said they discovered a bag in the trunk that contained more than 10 pounds of pot. Officers said the street value of the drugs would have been more than $10,000.
Domingo-Santiago was charged with operating under the influence of alcohol/drugs, operating a motor vehicle without a license, operating without insurance, possession of marijuana over 10 ounces, possession of marijuana with intent to sell and illegal possession near a school.
He was released on a $25,000 bond and was scheduled to face a judge in Bantam Superior Court on Feb. 3.
