A device that resembled a pipe bomb was rendered safe after it was found at a Phoenix convenience store just before 2 a.m. Sunday, police said.
A citizen at a Circle K store at 3101 W. Northern Ave. saw a backpack by the wall of the store, according to Phoenix police Officer James Holmes.
He opened the bag and saw what appeared to be a pipe bomb, Holmes said.
The witness flagged down a passing police patrol unit and when the officer looked in the bag he, too, thought the device looked suspicious, Holmes said.
Police cleared the area and called in the department's bomb squad.
The device was rendered safe and investigators determined it was a hoax device designed to look real.
