Springfield leaders focused on finding next police commissioner

Posted: Updated:

Six months from now, Springfield Police Commissioner William Fitchet is set to retire, and that has city leaders focusing in on who will become the city's next top cop.

Friday, we learned that Mayor Domenic Sarno plans to hire one of the city's three deputy chiefs to head the department.

Springfield City Councilor Tim Rooke told CBS 3 that he went to the mayor this past week, urging him to get the ball rolling.

"What drives it is you start to hear comments from the business community as to who the next police commissioner may be," said Rooke. "It's a critical position for the city of Springfield, particularly with the high crime rate that we have. People want to feel safe. They want to feel confident in whoever the new leader may be."

Fitchet will retire by the end of his contract in June, as he will have reached the mandatory retirement age of 65.
