Winter weather affects the Carolinas

Posted: Updated:
GREENVILLE, SC (FOX Carolina) -

A cold front is approaching from the northwest and is expected to bring a blast of winter along with it. This evening we will experience rain across the Upstate and the mountains as temperatures drop to the lower 30s across the Upstate and lower 20s for Western NC.

As we get into the overnight hours, we will look to see rain transition into a wintry mix and even snow in the mountains while the Upstate continues to see rain until early Monday when a brief period of snow can occur.

Breezy conditions will also accompany this winter like weather, making traveling more hazardous during the early morning hours. Some schools have already begun to post delays for Monday morning, which can be seen on our page through the link provided.

The National Weather Service has issued a Winter Storm Warning for Avery, Madison, Yancey, Mitchell, Swain, Haywood and Graham counties. This warning will be in effect from midnight tonight until 6 p.m. Monday evening.

Highest accumulation of about 2" to 4" is expected in the higher elevations along the Tennessee border while most other places will see less than an inch. Snow in the mountains will taper off by the afternoon in Western NC, but winds will stick around and be joined by the bitter cold area wide.

A Wind Chill Warning will be in effect from 6 p.m. Monday through noon Tuesday. Temperatures will continue to plummet as Monday continues, getting into the teens by the evening hours.

Wind chills can be in the negatives overnight across our region into Tuesday. We will finally look to warm up as the week continues, gradually getting back to average by Friday.

We may have to wait a little longer for fall to arrive in Arizona, but when it does, it's AMAZING. And that includes the fall colors. Yes, even in Arizona we get those reds, golds and yellows. It just takes a little bit of a road trip from the Valley to find them.
