ASU Football signs touted Junior College Defensive Lineman Edmond BoatengPosted: Updated:
Defensive lineman Edmond Boateng has signed a National Letter of Intent to play for the Sun Devils, Arizona State head coach Todd Graham announced Friday.
The mid-year NLI signing period for junior college players runs from Dec. 18 through Jan. 15, while the high school seniors signing period is Feb. 5-April 1.
Boateng, who will arrive in Tempe as a redshirt sophomore with three seasons of playing eligibility, is expected on campus in time for the start of spring semester on Jan. 13 and will participate in both offseason conditioning as well spring practice. A native of Wesley Chapel, Fla., he is interested in studying graphic design at ASU.
Boateng, a 6-4, 275-pound defensive lineman from New Mexico Military Institute, is regarded as a four-star prospect according to ESPN and is listed as one of the nation's top junior college defensive ends in the nation by a number of publications. ESPN ranks him as the nation's third-best junior college defensive end and the No. 25 overall junior college prospect, and Rivals.com names him the eighth-best junior college defensive end in the nation and the country's No. 48 overall junior college prospect.
He totaled 19 tackles, including six for loss with two sacks, and two pass breakups in 11 games as a redshirt freshman at New Mexico Military Institute in 2013 after he sat out the entire 2012 season due to a wrist injury. He registered 24 tackles, including five for loss with three sacks, as a senior at Wiregrass Ranch High School in 2011.
The Sun Devils play in the National University Holiday Bowl in San Diego on Dec. 30 at 8:15 p.m. MT against the Texas Tech Red Raiders. The game will be broadcast on ESPN, as well as ESPN Radio and the MidFirst Bank Sun Devil IMG Sports Network.
