GCU picked fourth; Ponnet named ALL-MIVAPosted: Updated:
Grand Canyon was picked fourth and Ben Ponnet was named to the all-conference team in the Midwestern Intercollegiate Volleyball Association preseason coaches' poll and all-league team, released today.
Grand Canyon had its most successful season in 2013, finishing 17-15 and upsetting Ohio State in the MIVA quarterfinals.
"I think our conference is loaded top to bottom," said GCU coach Jeremy Price. "While it's nice to be picked in the top half of the conference, it's the most competitive I've seen and you'll have to come out and be ready to play every night.
"The good news is you can beat anybody in the conference and the bad news is anybody in the conference can beat you. It's going to be a great battle in 2014."
Ponnet is a two-time all-league choice. He was a second team selection last year and also earned an AVCA National Player of the Week award.
"It's nice to see Ben Ponnet being recognized before the season by the coaches of the MIVA," said Price of his senior from Belgium. "He'll be one of the players to watch out for in 2014 and I'm looking forward to him having a tremendous senior season."
GCU opens the 2014 season Jan. 10 at Pacific. The first home game is Jan. 24 at Antelope Gymnasium against George Mason, while the MIVA opener is Feb. 7 at Lindenwood. The first home MIVA contest is Feb. 14 against defending conference champion and 2014 favorite Loyola Chicago.
