Citizens help Mesa PD catch fugitivePosted: Updated:
A fugitive wanted on several outstanding warrants is in police custody after alert residents pointed officers to his whereabouts.
The incident began Tuesday morning when patrol officers pulled over a car driven by Trevor Terry for alleged traffic violations in the area of Mesa Drive and Brown.
As an officer approached the vehicle which had turned into an apartment complex, the car sped away.
By the time the officer got back into his patrol car and onto the roadway, the vehicle had disappeared, said Mesa police Sgt. Tony Landato.
"There were other vehicles on the roadway and those helpful citizens indicated the vehicle fled westbound onto Brown Road," Landato said.
The officer reached Center and Brown, but still did not see Terry's vehicle.
"Additional citizens directed the officer to northbound Center," Landato said.
The vehicle was eventually located abandoned at 1505 N. Center. The driver was found hiding in a shed in a residential backyard near 1535 N. Pima.
Terry was taken into custody on a burglary warrant from Maricopa County Sheriff's Office and a failure to appear warrant out of Mesa.
He was also charged with trespassing.
"Were it not for those citizens assisting our officers, we likely would not have ever located this subject," Landato said.
