Chateen Latfolla (Maricopa County Sheriff's Office)
PHOENIX (CBS5/AP) -
The man accused of carjacking an elderly couple near Ahwatukee and driving off with the husband still in the vehicle was sentenced to 12 years in prison Friday.
Chateen Latfolla, 32, had pleaded guilty assault, kidnapping, two drug offenses and criminal trespassing in other cases, Maricopa Country prosecutors said.
Judge Hugh Hegyi also sentenced Latfolla to three years of intensive probation.
The Dec. 14, 2013, incident began when Arizona Department of Public officers pulled over a pickup driven by Latfolla near Interstate 10 and Baseline Road for numerous traffic violations.
As an officer approached and reached the bed area of the vehicle, Latfolla sped away, according to a probable cause statement.
The officer gave chase but lost sight when the vehicle exited on Elliot Road. Latfolla collided with two victims on the off-ramp. Latfolla's pickup then struck a large rock, which immobilized his vehicle near 5100 E. Elliot Rd.
Latfolla jumped out of his vehicle and ran to a car carrying an elderly couple, court paperwork stated. The suspect reached into the open window of the vehicle and opened the driver's side door, police said.
The suspect tossed the elderly driver from the vehicle by knocking her to the ground, authorities said. The woman suffered a severe laceration on the back of her head. Latfolla left her bleeding, according to the probable cause statement. The 85-year-old victim was taken to the hospital and is expected to be OK.
Latfolla then carjacked the vehicle still carrying a 91-year-old man. The suspect drove to 5040 Wild Horse Pass Blvd., where he ran from the vehicle in the parking lot area of the casino.
Officers responded to the area once Latfolla's description was broadcast. They found him in a nearby outlet mall and took him into custody.
Police said Latfolla had two small aluminum wrappers which contained a black tar substance believed to be heroin.
