Columbia Gas requesting rate increase

Posted: Updated:

Attorney General Martha Coakley announced today that Columbia Gas of Massachusetts wants to increase rates by $30 million.

Coakley says the proposed hike is the third request in the last four years.

Coakley opposes the request. She cites lavish spending practices including company jets and executive retreats.

Columbia gas was approved last year for a rate increase. Sheila Dorion, of Columbia Gas, released the following statement to CBS 3 Springfield saying "The rate increase is based on Columbia Gas' need to continue with programs to replace aging infrastructure as well as information systems. A rate increase such as this is part of the public process where by regulated companies such as Columbia Gas puts forth as a request to the Department of Public Utilities for an adjustment in its rate. The attorney general is part of the process and served as the consumer advocate in rate proceedings. The Department of Public Utilities conducts a thorough and public investigation into the companies expenditures and revenue requests, and we expect a decision by the end of February 2014 by the Department of Public Utilities."
