PHOENIX (AP) -
A Democratic state lawmaker says he will introduce a bill that will legalize marijuana and instead regulate and tax it much as alcohol is now.
Rep. Ruben Gallego says putting people in prison for marijuana possession is no longer a wise use of taxpayer dollars and ruins the lives of countless people who are harming no one. He says police could shift resources to handling more serious crimes.
Gallego wants pot sold in stores to people 21 years and older.
Gallego is a Marine Corps veteran of the war in Iraq who grew up in a poor part of Phoenix. He said Tuesday that he has never smoked marijuana. He serves as assistant minority leader in the House.
The bill would likely have a tough time passing the Republican-controlled Legislature.
