Kasei Haddix says the crime spree has her family afraid for their lives.
CHARLOTTE, TN (WSMV) -
An apparent joyride has left a trail of destruction behind. Investigators suspect teenagers set fire to three different cars, then disappeared into the night. Now, one of the victims fears those vandals will be back.
Several cars and a mailbox were set on fire in what Dickson County authorities think was a Halloween prank gone too far.
Deputies say they're not laughing, and they're ready to press serious charges against whoever did it.
Kasei Haddix says it has her family afraid for their lives.
"We're working on our carport right now, trying to keep the vehicles close to the house. We're up every time we hear a noise. We're up with flashlights looking around, making sure everything is safe with the house," she said.
It began as a post-Halloween joyride through Charlotte as a group started throwing toilet tissue in people's yards as a prank, but it quickly escalated when three cars were set on fire within minutes.
"This is very dangerous right here. This is going way above and beyond what teenagers get out and do," said Dickson County Sheriff's Detective Brent Johnson.
"If they are going to vehicles, what's next? If you don't catch them, what's it going to escalate to?" Haddix asked.
Investigators believe students are to blame, but they don't yet know who.
"It's going to be normal, everyday go-to-school teenagers that we're going to be dealing with on this," Johnson said.
Haddix said her insurance won't cover her car fire, so it's a total loss. She said she hopes to start some community programs to show teens this kind of thing is not OK.
"I'm more worried about how we, as a community, can pull together and make sure this doesn't happen again," Haddix said.
The suspects will be facing arson charges as well as potential reckless endangerment and criminal trespassing charges.
They will also likely have to pay for all of the damages.
