Police in Gastonia have arrested a man they say tried to rob a local bank by saying his children had been kidnapped.
Just before 11:15 a.m. a man, later identified as 20-year-old Jorge Manuel Ortiz Zarco, went into the Bank of America on South New Hope Road and gave a note to the teller.
The note, police said, requested money from the bank for his kids who had been kidnapped.
No money was taken from the bank, no one was injured, and Zarco left the scene.
Once the man was identified he was apprehended in Lowell and admitted that there was no kidnapping involved, officials said.
Zarco was arrested and charged with robbery.
