New Haven Fire Department facing retirementsPosted: Updated:
The New Haven Fire Department has promoted members to drillmaster and assistant drillmaster, the first steps to rebuilding a department losing scores of specialists to retirement.
The New Haven Register reports that the new drillmasters are responsible for training recruits and periodically training Fire Department members.
Assistant Chief Patrick Egan say about 100 jobs are vacant and more are expected with retirements. The department plans to bring in a new academy class in the first quarter of 2014.
Fire Chief Michael Grant says the new recruits in the coming year will represent at least a quarter of the department once training is complete.
Several recently promoted fire inspectors also are filling their jobs. Inspectors are responsible for making sure buildings are safe.
