Buckeye officially changes name from 'town' to 'city'
Mayor Jackie Meck
BUCKEYE, AZ (CBS5) -
Officials in Buckeye are officially changing the name to the city of Buckeye instead of a town, in an effort to drum up new business.
On Monday, Buckeye's "Town Hall" sign is going to be changed to "City Hall" in downtown Buckeye.
Late last year, voters in Buckeye accepted the recommendation by Buckeye officials that by changing its designation, Buckeye would have a better chance in its economic development efforts and creating new jobs for its residents.
"This is great news for Buckeye and its residents," Mayor Jackie Meck said. "This name change will provide an opportunity to further promote Buckeye as a location for business and industry.
Meck has called Buckeye home for more than seven decades.
Buckeye's population was about 55,000 last year. The population was 6,500 at the 2000 census.
