Kickstarter campaign for Arizona Latin festivalPosted: Updated:
A well-known Arizona family of performing artists is taking their passion to new lengths.
Carmen and Zarco Guerrero want to create and keep a signature Dia de los Muertos, or Day of the Dead Festival in Phoenix, but they need to raise $6,000. So they've taken their fundraising campaign to the internet funding platform Kickstarter.
"We feel our culture is a gift that we have to share with the community at large," says Zarco Guerrero.
The couple staged their first such festival in Mesa 33 years ago. Last year they brought it to Phoenix. This year much of their funding dried up, so they took their fundraising to Kickstarter.
"One of the main reasons is to make sure we have an event that is completely free and open to the public," Zarco Guerrero says on the video they had to put together for the Kickstarter website.
So far, the couple is very close to reaching their goal with donations coming from all over the country.
"This is really like a vote of confidence. To me people voting with their dollars, they're supporting us," Carmen Guerrero adds.
The couple is hoping this new way of raising money will help them create a colorfully, unforgettable Dia de los Muertos that will give the entire community something families can enjoy for generations to come.
"The whole idea of crowd funding came about at the right time because there's very little funding right now for the arts so we're having to learn the whole process. I'd like to think that we're on the forefront here in Arizona and that we can be successful and then pass on this experience to other groups like ourselves," Zarco Guerrero says.
The Kickstarter campaign ends Oct. 17, 2013. The Dia de los Muertos PHX festival will be held Oct. 27, 2013 at Margaret Hance Park in downtown Phoenix.
