The Valley's drowning prevention community education outreach program is working again to raise awareness about watching kids around water.
Last weekend, a 2-year-old girl was found floating in a Phoenix backyard pool. Sadly, she did not survive. Her death marks the 36th water-related death in the Valley this year. Of those, 10 were children.
Tuesday morning, a WAVE walk took place to remind people the importance of water safety. WAVE stands for Water Awareness Vigilance and Education. The group is made up of members from:
Phoenix Fire Department
Paradise Valley/Phoenix College Fire Academy
Phoenix Police Department
City of Phoenix Aquatics
Drowning Prevention Coalition of Arizona
Maricopa County Safe Kids
During Tuesday's campaign, the volunteers walked around the neighborhood where the last victim lived. They are armed with flyers and information about having an emergency plan, installing a pool fence and other life-saving measures every pool owner should have and know.
