Springfield plans for 100th anniversary of municipal group

The city is planning a celebration that is a century in the making.

Friday afternoon, Mayor Domenic Sarno announced plans for the Springfield Municipal Group's 100th anniversary celebration.

The municipal group is made up of City Hall, Symphony Hall, and the clock tower in between the two buildings.

The great-grandson of former Springfield Mayor John Denison, who was in office when the buildings opened in 1913, said it is an honor to be part of the festivities.

"The kind of interesting thing today is that 100 year connection," said Jonathan Fantini Porter. "The city's key that was handed to my great-grandfather, in a sense kind of unlocked opportunity and growth for Springfield. That key has now come back to Springfield for the first time in 100 years."

The 100th anniversary celebration will be Dec. 6-8.

It will include two concerts at Symphony Hall.
