MARICOPA, AZ (CBS5) -
A 23-year-old was arrested Thursday after deputies said he randomly stabbed two teenage boys in Maricopa, sending one of them to a hospital for surgery for wounds to his stomach.
Jonathan Zavala-Campa was booked into the Pinal County Adult Detention Center on two counts of aggravated assault involving a dangerous crime against a child after the two boys were stabbed about 11:40 p.m. Sept. 21.
The two boys told Pinal County sheriff's deputies that a man they didn't know walked up to them and began stabbing them for no reason.
Witnesses said Zavala-Campa was intoxicated and that he "wanted to get into something," so he approached the two strangers and stabbed them with a knife, according to a Pinal County sheriff's spokesman.
Deputies said a large gathering was breaking up when they arrived. A 14-year-old boy was stabbed in the stomach and taken to a hospital, where he was in stable condition after undergoing surgery. The PCSO spokesman said the boy faces a lengthy recovery.
The 13-year-old boy was taken to a hospital where he received stitches for a cut on an arm, the spokesman said.
Witness interviews and further investigation led deputies to arrest Zavala-Campa.
