PHOENIX (CBS5) -
Phoenix police were trying to piece together the events that led to the death of a motorist who was found with a gunshot wound in his car Monday morning.
The 37-year-old unidentified man was westbound on Dixileta Drive when his sedan failed to negotiate a southbound curve, left the roadway and crossed into northbound traffic on Interstate 17, according to a Phoenix police spokesman.
The sedan careened off the median wall, struck a passing car and landed in an open area next to the interstate.
Police said it appeared the man had been shot inside the car, indicating a self-inflicted gunshot wound.
The driver of the northbound car was not hurt, police said.
"We're thankful only one person got involved in this accident," said Phoenix police Lt. Chuck Williams, pointing at that the incident happened during morning rush-hour traffic on the freeway.
Police were waiting on a warrant before searching the victim's car, the spokesman said.
No other information was immediately available.
