Hallman announces run for state treasurerPosted: Updated:
Former Tempe Mayor Hugh Hallman announced on Thursday he's entering the race for Arizona treasurer.
He released the following statement and also put it on his website:
"In January 2013, I announced that I would seek the office of Governor of Arizona. When I did so, I said that I would then begin traveling the state and talking to as many people as possible about how to rejuvenate Arizona's economy.
"Since then, I've had a tremendous experience. I've met with thousands of Arizona residents who share the same dreams and concerns. We all want to make our state a better place to live. Most recognize that we need to grow our economy, improve our educational system, and work together to solve our other challenges.
"Yet one concern I heard repeatedly was, "We need others besides a Governor providing the leadership to improve Arizona." I heard clearly that one person alone is not going to lead our state through the significant issues we face. We need strong leadership on all levels of state government to realize Arizona's potential.
"With me and other strong candidates for Governor emerging, people kept asking if there were other offices in which I might be able to apply my skills, background, expertise and energy. People who were supportive of my candidacy for Governor also wanted to make sure that I continued to be involved in public service if another gubernatorial nominee was chosen.
"These conversations culminated this week in my receipt of a letter from many civic leaders whom I respect greatly, formally asking me to consider a different role in public service than what I had originally planned. That letter is attached. I was humbled by this show of support.
"After a great deal of consideration, including a meeting with former U.S. Treasurer Rosario Marin, I have decided to withdraw my candidacy for Governor of Arizona in the 2014 election. Instead, I will be running for an office that also utilizes my background as a former Mayor, an economist, an attorney and an educator - the office of State Treasurer.
"As Former Treasurer Dean Martin has shown, the State Treasurer can have an extremely positive impact on public policy in Arizona. I will have the same priorities - job creation, improving our educational system, and promoting lower taxes and fiscal responsibility - for the office of Treasurer as I would for the office of Governor. In fact, I believe the State Treasurer's role is an ideal one for the advancement of many of the issues that currently concern our state the most.
"Our campaign information, including our web site at www.hughhallman.com, will be updated to reflect the campaign for Treasurer. I look forward to the upcoming campaign, and educating Arizonans on how the State Treasurer can be on the forefront of improving our state's economy and quality of life."
