PHOENIX (CBS5) -
A total of nine vehicles involved in collisions were causing heavy delays for rush-hour motorists Tuesday on southbound Interstate 17 at Glendale Avenue.
Five cars were involved in a pileup in the HOV lane and another four vehicles were impeding traffic on the Glendale Avenue exit ramp.
The Arizona Department of Public Safety said there were some injuries, but had no information on the number of injured or the severity.
The five-car pileup at 6 a.m. happened just past the Glendale Avenue exit ramp and only the outside lane of the interstate was open to traffic. Vehicles were backed up as far north as Dunlap Avenue.
CBS 5 News traffic reporter Chelsey Davis recommended southbound motorists exit at least by Cactus Road and then take 35th Avenue west of I-17 or 19th Avenue east of I-17 to reconnect with I-17 at Bethany Home or Camelback roads.
Tow trucks and their crews were working to clear the cars from the freeway.
The Arizona Department of Transportation estimated the heavy delays until at least 8 a.m.
