Police identified man shot, killed in New LondonPosted: Updated:
New London police released the identity of a man who was shot and killed in the city Thursday night.
Officers were called to the area of Connecticut Avenue and Prest Street around 9 p.m. after receiving reports of gunshots.
"All of a sudden in sounded like firecrackers. I didn't pay no attention," said Kevin Wright of New London. "Next thing I knew, cops and ambulances are flying down the street."
When police arrived they located the victim, who was identified as a 29-year-old Jesus Pinero, of Norwich, lying in the roadway suffering from several gunshot wounds.
Pinero was taken to a Lawrence and Memorial Hospital where he later died.
An autopsy Friday by the state medical examiner's office said Pinero was shot multiple times.
Police spent several hours combing a large scene that stretched nearly two blocks, looking for evidence.
A makeshift memorial of candles and flowers grew all Friday on the sidewalk where Pinero was shot.
"This is horrible," said New London resident Gayle Huff, who heard the shooting. "This is scary. This is getting close."
The Connecticut State Police Major Crimes Unit are assisting the New London Police Department in the investigation.
Anyone with information into the shooting is urged to call the New London Police Department at 860-447-1481.
