PHOENIX (CBS5) -

The Phoenix College Bears' Volleyball team broke the seal on their 2013 season today by splitting a pair of hard-fought 5-set matches at the New Mexico Military Institute Volleyball Classic in Roswell, New Mexico.  Despite never trailing against the host Broncos in the early match of the day, the Bears had to go the distance in the 5th and final set to earn a 25-16, 21-25, 25-23, 19-25, 15-12 victory.

It was much the same atmosphere in the final match of the day, although this time, Phoenix College was never able to break through for the lead against Clarendon College from Texas.  The Bears battled back to win the 4th set, but ran out of gas late in the 5th and deciding set to fall, 19-25, 25-20, 16-25, 25-20, 13-15.

The Bears will play another pair of matches in Saturday's final day of action in Roswell, taking on Dodge City (KS) before winding up play with a non-conference match against ACCAC rival South Mountain Community College.
