Phoenix police were forced to shoot a man who attacked and slightly wounded them with a machete at an apartment complex Monday night.
The unidentified man charged the officers as they were investigating a report of a violent argument in the apartment near 59th Avenue and Roosevelt Street, said Phoenix police Sgt. Trent Crump.
One officer was cut on a hand and the other on a forearm before they opened fire on the man, Crump said. Officers tried to revive the man before he was taken to a hospital, where he died.
Both officers were also taken to a hospital, but were expected to be OK, Crump said.
A woman had called police just before midnight to report the man and another woman arguing in her apartment and that she was afraid because the man owned a machete, Crump said. She told police she had to escape from the apartment to call police.
Four children, all younger than 10 years old, were also in the unit, Crump said.
Police did not release the names of anyone involved in the incident.
No other information was immediately available.
