Agents and troopers with the Texas Department of Public Safety investigated American Medical Center on Wednesday morning. At around 9:45, the Texas Department of Public Safety and Drug Enforcement Administration arrived at the doctor's office, which is located at 212 Old Grande Road. According to DPS, officials received a tip about how drugs were being prescribed at the office.
Dr. Gregory Terrell was arrested and charged with diversion of a controlled substance. Office manager Melissa York was arrested and charged possession of a controlled substance by fraud. Both are third degree felonies and carry a two to 10 year sentence.
Terrell did voluntarily surrender both of those registrations, the DEA registration and the DPS registration," Trooper Jean Dark, Texas Department of Public Safety, said.
Those registrations enable Terrell to handle drugs. At this time, agents have not said exactly what medications were being improperly prescribed. He still has his medical license, but is unable to prescribe drugs pending further investigation.
"Now he does not have that ability, to hand out, handle, controlled substance," she said.
Both Terrell and York are being held at Smith County Jail. According to officials, more charges could follow.
Terrell has had a license with the Texas Medical Board since November 1996. He graduated from the University of Illinois College of Medicine in 1986.
