A 27-year-old man, who U.S. Customs and Border Protection said had "trusted-traveler" status, was arrested Wednesday for trying to smuggle a Mexican national into the U.S.
CBP revoked the Secure Electronic Network for Traveler's Rapid Inspection (SENTRI) membership of Juan Carlos Chavez, 27, after officers found a 34-year-old woman in the truck of his Ford Sedan.
CBP said the trunk did not have an internal release, and the woman had to be removed through the back seat.
SENTRI members are treated with a higher level of trust, but are not exempt from inspection, according to Port Director Guadalupe Ramirez.
The vehicle was seized, and the woman is being held as a witness in the case.
Chavez was transferred for federal prosecution.
