Suspected prostitute arrested 3 times in less than 3 daysPosted: Updated:
(WMC-TV) - Memphis police busted a suspected prostitute three times in less than three days. Three separate bonds of $250 got Tangallett Andrew out of jail. Now, experts say getting her off of the streets for good is a little more tricky.
Memphis police say the 25-year-old suspected prostitute returned to Lamar Avenue twice after an initial arrest Saturday morning. Her second booking photo was taken early Sunday morning. The third was snapped on Monday.
The last of her arrests happened near the Love's Truck Stop at Lamar Avenue and American Way. Police happened to spot her while filling out an accident report.
"A lot of time what happens is they'll get arrested, the pimp will post bond, he'll put them back out on the street," explained Carol Wiley, who is a counselor.
Carol Wiley runs "A Way Out", a program for those seeking an escape from the sex-for-sale industry. She wishes more could be done to help women who are arrested time after time for the same crime. Wiley says it is hard to help sometimes because of underlying issues, such as drug abuse.
"I think that prostitutes do need a program," she said.
Wiley's program has helped some 500 ex-strippers, prostitutes, and other sex trade workers. But it can only house about six at one time.
"Not one of them has ever come in here and told me that that's ... that they enjoyed what they did," she explained.
She believes change is possible for women who work the streets, if the right path is provided.
Tangallett Andrew had three court dates Tuesday morning. These were her first prostitution arrests in Shelby County.
