Lowndes Co. monument marking historical lynching vandalizedPosted: Updated:
Lowndes County deputies are investigating vandalism to a historical marker.
Someone shot bullet holes into the Mary Turner monument on Hwy. 122. Turner was a pregnant black woman who was lynched in 1918.
A Valdosta State University professor and his students petitioned the Georgia Historical Society to put the marker up in her memory.
"What motivated us was we wanted that story told, we wanted that history known, we didn't want it to be covered up anymore," says Dr. Mark George.
The Mary Turner Project is offering a $200 reward for information on the vandalism.
