PHOENIX (CBS5) -
Police say they've located the vehicle of a man who police believe set his girlfriend on fire, but they're still looking for the suspect.
Phoenix police spokesman Sgt. Trent Crump said the black Volkswagen that Ivan Rodriguez, 44, was last seen driving was recovered Monday morning in the area of 44th and Van Buren streets.
Detectives said Rodriguez got into an argument with his live-in girlfriend, after the woman returned home near Loop 202 and 32nd Street, just after 5 a.m. Saturday. Police said she spent part of the evening with a friend.
Police said the fight ended with Rodriguez dousing the woman with gasoline, and setting her on fire.
Medics took her to the hospital with burns covering 30 percent of her body. Claudina Lehr is a neighbor and friend of the family.
"He must have just flipped. I don't know. They've always been a sweet couple with three great kids. There has never been any domestic violence of any kind that I am aware of. They've had some arguments, but nothing violent," said Lehr.
Officers said Rodriguez remains on the run. Investigators said he has a severe burn on one of his forearms. Lehr hopes he will do the right thing, and turn himself in.
"My god, Ivan we love you. I don't know what happened. You really need to turn yourself in for your family's sake and for your sake," said Lehr.
Police believe Rodriguez is still in the Phoenix area. He was seen Saturday near 52nd Street and Thomas, 52nd Street and Van Buren and 51st Avenue and Thomas.
Rodriguez faces attempted murder charges.
