TEMPE, AZ (CBS5) -
The Tempe Police Department says their officers will be out in full force to stop drunken drivers during the long Independence Day weekend.
The Tempe Police Department spokesman Mike Pooley said the seven Tempe officers that participated in the DUI Task Force made 31 stops on Thursday's patrol. Pooley said nine arrests were made for misdemeanor DUI and two arrests for extreme DUI.
Tempe police said the DUI Task Force Command Post will be at the southeast corner of University and Mill on Friday from late afternoon until the early morning hours after the bars close.
The Department of Health and Human Services, Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, reports that alcohol-related motor vehicle crashes kill someone in the United States every 53 minutes.
Police remind people planning to drink to get a designated driver, call a cab, use public transportation or call a friend.
