Caught: 2-time AZ escapee's mom tipped off policePosted: Updated:
A man who escaped twice from the clutches of Arizona sheriff's deputies was finally apprehended in Yavapai County, but not without resisting arrest.
Miguel Jerry Zepeda, 22, was taken into custody Wednesday after his mom tipped off authorities where he could be found.
When Yavapai County sheriff's deputies confronted Zepeda at a home in the 3100 block of Gold Drive in Camp Verde, the man ran out a rear door. Deputies said they were able to grab ahold of his clothing to slow his pace.
Zepeda continued to resist and attempt to flee, but was eventually subdued and handcuffed.
Prior to his arrest, Zepeda was last seen on June 6 heading south on Highway 179 in a silver station wagon with an unidentified woman.
Earlier that day, he escaped after he was arrested in the Village of Oak Creek on suspicion of contributing to the delinquency of a minor, littering and providing a false name and birth date when officers interviewed him.
He had been placed into handcuffs and seated outside the patrol vehicle when he bolted while the deputy was completing a follow-up. The deputy gave chase but was unable to catch him. Marijuana was recovered from the vehicle, YCSO said.
About 3 a.m., the Camp Verde Marshall's Office tracked Zepeda to his mother's house in the 1800 block of Ash Lane. Before they arrived, Zepeda's mother, 44-year-old Elizabeth Garcia, grabbed Zepeda, climbed into their vehicle and dropped him off near the river to avoid law enforcement contact, deputies said.
On Wednesday, deputies arrested Garcia in the 6500 block of Highway 179 on charges of one count of hindering prosecution. During questioning about her activities the morning of June 6, Garcia admitted picking up her still handcuffed son at the Giant gas station following his initial escape, YCSO said. Zepeda had previously called her to get a ride out of the area, deputies said.
Garcia was booked at the Camp Verde Detention Center. Zepeda was transported to the Camp Verde Detention Center and booked on a number of charges, including aggravated assault on a peace officer.
