A man has been arrested in Maricopa County for killing his neighbor's pit bull by shooting it twice in the head at close range while it was tied to a fence.

A Maricopa County Sheriff's Office spokesman said the dog was shot at close range on Tuesday night.

A sheriff's office spokesman said 43-year-old Briant Winiecke confessed to shooting the animal and was booked for cruelty to animals and for recklessly discharging the shotgun in a residential neighborhood.

The spokesman said that the day before the shooting, the pit bull had wandered to a nearby house, where it killed a 14-year-old basset hound.

Winiecke had nothing to do with either dog and simply lived nearby, the spokesman said.
