Milford officer running Ironman for Sandy Hook victim
Milford officer Michael Compare is competing for Sandy Hook victim Chase Kowalski
MILFORD, CT (WFSB) -
Milford police officer Michael Compare will participate in a half Ironman triathlon at Lake Quassy in honor of Chase Kowalski, one of the 20 children shot and killed inside Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown in December.
The Rev3 Half-Ironman Triathlon is a 70.3-mile race that consists of a 1.2-mile swim, a 56-mile bike ride and a 13.1-mile run and will be held on June 2.
Compare, a police officer for nearly 13 years, recently joined the Milford Police Department and was one of the hundreds of first responders that raced to Sandy Hook after the mass shooting. He helped Newtown officers cover patrols and assisted in escorts and security details in Newtown.
Compare has competed in several marathons, half marathons, triathlons and competed in his first Ironman last August.
He said that when he learned Kowalski was a runner, he decided he wanted to become more involved and said he wanted to Race4Chase.
Compare is collecting donations for the Chase Kowalski Memorial Fund. The goal of the fund, which was set up by his parents, is to positively change the lives of children and families through family and children-focused programs.
