Meriden Boy Scouts say gays welcomePosted: Updated:
The Boy Scouts of America Connecticut Yankee Council president announced that scouting is open to all youth and adults regardless of their sexual orientation.
The announcement was made on the Connecticut Yankee Council website.
"Our Scouts and leaders repeatedly pledge to respect all people and defend the rights of others. Prejudice, intolerance and unlawful discrimination of any form are unacceptable within our membership," Council President Michael Abrahamson said in a statement.
Around 1,400 local Boy Scouts of America leaders will attend a two-day meeting, and on Wednesday the first ballots will be cast on whether or not to allow homosexual Boy Scouts.
Scouting officials, the Associated Press reported, are proposing to allow openly gay Scouts but want to ban openly gay Scout leaders.
The final vote is scheduled for Thursday.
Conservatives have denounced allowing openly gay Scouts and Scout leaders because they believe that would undermine the Scouts' traditions.
