BRISTOL, CT (WFSB) -
Bristol school officials warned parents to be on the lookout after a bear was spotted near one of the city's middle schools Friday.
A bear was spotted near Northeast Middle school.
School officials sent out a phone message to all parents warning them about the bear and asking students that walk home to be picked up.
One official at Ivy Drive school said a bear has been seen often at Northeast Middle school. She added that there were several reports of a bear Friday.
"I got a phone call from my granddaughter who was practicing softball at Northeast school," said Dave DeFelippi, who lives next to NorthEast Middle School. "And she said tell grandma to watch out! I says for what? She says because we saw a bear and they stopped our practice."
Several Eyewitness News viewers have emailed the station indicating that they have seen a bear in the city Friday afternoon.
DeFelippi told Eyewitness News he's seen coyotes before, but never bears. So he said he is keeping an eye out as summer draws near.
Ivy Drive school was dismissed at 3:25 p.m.
Officials said there are no plans to do anything different at the schools on Monday.
A bear was previously spotted in the area of Rambler Street and Shagbark Drive during June 2012. Police said the bear was never captured.
