Report: Lightning started fire that destroyed Union Grove ISD building

Multiple fire departments were called to a fire at a building used by the Union Grove Independent School District.

The building is located on the district's school campus on Union Grove Road, north of the City of Gladewater. 

The building was a home, that the district was converting into use as technology building.

Gladewater, Gilmer, East and West Mountain Volunteer Fire Departments were the first to respond to the fire. No one was inside when the fire started.

According to Union Grove ISD officials, lightning struck a tree near the building, the grounded on a gas meter before traveling along the gas pipe to the building.

Union Grove ISD is a 2A school in Upshur County with an enrollment of approximately 750 students, according to the district.

The fire will not affect Union Grove classes on Friday.
