Grand Canyon edges Azusa Pacific 5-4, takes third place at PacWest ChampionshipPosted: Updated:
Fifth-seed Grand Canyon (14-8) edged #2 Azusa Pacific (21-2) 5-4 to claim third place at the 2013 Pacific West Conference Men's Tennis Championship on Saturday, April 20, at the Central Oahu Regional Park in Waipio, Hawai‘i.
Grand Canyon took a 2-1 lead after junior Ahmad Saleem (Phoenix, AZ/Desert Vista) and freshman Arjun Bal (Phoenix, AZ/Cactus) won first doubles 8-5 and the freshmen tandem of Alexander Roggenkamp (Hamburg, Germany) and Felix Schueller (Amstetten, Australia) grabbed second doubles 8-1.
Azusa Pacific Ben Egers (Neustadt, Germany) and sophomore Gary Yam (Hong Kong, China) grabbed third doubles 8-6.
The two teams split the singles competition with Saleem earning his second victory of the day for GCU at second singles. He rallied for a 2-6, 7-5, 6-1 comeback win. Bal also picked up another victory, taking fourth singles 6-4, 7-5, while rookie Meidy Chazeau (Lisbon, Portugal) earned a win at sixth singles 6-3, 6-4.
Azusa Pacific claimed a first singles victory when GCU freshman Yann Kaelin (Marly, France) had to retire and yield the match to senior Jochem Hoefnagels (Asten, Netherlands).
Freshman Jan Myer (Heiligenhaus, Germany) took third singles for the Cougars.
