Search for missing kayakers turns into recoveryPosted: Updated:
The search for a missing man and his daughter is over, with no word on where the two are.
Law enforcement and the Coast Guard spent Sunday searching for a missing father and daughter in the Sandusky Bay. Jonathan Francis, 30, of Sandusky, and his daughter Viola, 12, were reported missing at 5:20 a.m. Sunday.
The Erie County Sheriff's Office and Margaretta Township Fire Department scanned the shoreline and the Coast Guard in Detroit sent out a helicopter to aid in the search. By 7 p.m. Sunday, all searches were called off.
The pair was last seen around 5 p.m. Saturday, kayaking near Crystal Rock. They planned to paddle to the Edison Bridge and back, according to officials.
Reportedly, neither kayaker was wearing a life jacket.
They have not been seen since Saturday evening. Francis's girlfriend reported the pair as missing on Sunday.
One kayak was bright blue and the other was green. According to the Ottawa County Sheriff's Office, both of the kayaks were located near South Lightner road in Ottawa County, but they were empty. One kayak was flipped upside down, the other was partially submerged in water, leading officials to believe the boats washed ashore.
Authorities say the water was around 39 degrees at the time.
Anyone who sees Jonathan or Viola Francis is asked to call 911 or the Erie County Sheriff's Office at 419-625-7951.
