The Grand Canyon University baseball team retained their second-place ranking in the latest National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association poll, as released today. The Antelopes are 26-5 overall and 19-1 in Pacific West Conference play.
Fellow conference member Dixie State is ranked sixth, California Baptist is eighth, and Hawai'i Pacific is ninth.
The ‘Lopes won each of their six games played last week, two of which were come-from-behind victories to keep intact their 17-game win streak. The streak is tied for the longest in 27 years, as the 1986 squad also won 17 straight from March 2-24. The school record for most consecutive wins is 27, which was set from March 6-31, 1984.
GCU is led offensively by Derek Mendoza with a .404 batting average (38-for-94) and team-high 28 RBI, tied for fourth-most in the PacWest. Steven Swingle leads all conference batters with six triples on the season. On the mound, Coley Bruns is a perfect 6-0 with a 1.24 ERA (6 ER in 43.2 IP), while Andrew Naderer leads the squad with 44 strikeouts in his eight starts, third-most in the conference.
