A man from Clinton is in critical condition after his car crashed off an overpass onto Interstate 91 in Windsor Tuesday morning.
Around 10 a.m., a 2012 Jeep Grand Cherokee being driven by Richard Mazzella, 46, somehow slammed through a bridge's concrete barrier and plummeted about 25 feet onto the median of I-91 in Windsor.
Almost immediately, police, fire and EMS crews were at the scene. Upon arrival, officers found the Grand Cherokee on its roof and on fire.
Emergency crews worked to extinguish the fire that erupted as a result of the crash.
Emergency workers were able to extricate Mazzella from the vehicle and took him to Hartford Hospital where he remained in critical condition as of 3 p.m.
The crash slowed traffic on both sides of the interstate while emergency crews worked to put the fire out and clear the crash from the median, as well as people slowing down to catch a glimpse of something not seen every day.
"It's pretty crazy," said Mark Pinto, of Naugatuck.
The scene has since been cleared from the median, but police have been stationed on the overpass because of the gaping hole left after the car slammed through it.
"That's crazy," said Kevin Buczko of Windsor. "You never expect something like that to happen."
The crash remains under investigation by Windsor Police Department with the assistance of the North Central Municipal Accident Reconstruction Team.
However, the question that remains is, what happened?
Police said they believe Mazzella came straight off the exit 37 HOV off-ramp, kept going and then slammed straight into the bridge.
Anyone with any information about the crash is asked to call the Windsor Police Department at 860-688-5273.
