Mindy McCready's hairdresser recounts relationship with singer
NASHVILLE, TN (WSMV) -
Country singer Mindy McCready was laid to rest in her hometown of Ft. Myers, FL, on Tuesday.
Her fans say McCready's voice was angelic, but over the years the country music star battled demons that stole her voice and eventually her life.
The 37-year-old was found dead Feb. 17 from a self-inflicted gunshot wound.
Her Nashville hairdresser, Denikka Harris, remembers the singer as more than a troubled soul.
McCready said she felt relaxed whenever she went to see Harris at the Classic Hair Studio on Charlotte Avenue.
It was there that McCready's personal demons could be put aside at least for a while and gave Harris time to get to know her personally.
The two met right after the May 2010 flood that devastated Music City.
Harris' salon was temporarily closed after it sustained water damage during the flood, but McCready searched for her business online and wouldn't take no for an answer when she wanted her hair done.
"She called me and said her name was Malinda and she was adamant about wanting me to do her hair," said Harris.
That one conversation began a year of closeness. Every three months, Mindy would pull into the back of the salon, and make herself at home.
Harris had heard about the country music singer's bout with drugs, alcohol, custody battles and other rumors. Through it all, Harris said she accepted McCready, faults and all.
"I feel like God sent her to me because I love the Lord, and she could come here to be free and let her hair down," said Harris. "It's a waste of a terrific talent. She was a beautiful person inside and out."
