The Middletown Police Department arrested an Old Saybrook man who is accused of shaking a baby so violently that it suffered serious injuries.

Police said the investigation began in 2012 when Yale-New Haven Children's Hospital alerted the Department of Children and Families about an infant that was brought in with severe injuries and were consistent with abuse.

Old Saybrook police were also notified because the child's mother, Crystal Dorothy, lived in the town.

The investigation showed that Keith Loftus was in charge of the baby, which is now 1 year old, and was Dorothy's boyfriend.

On Thursday, Loftus was arrested after Middletown officers noticed him looking into cars near the YMCA on Union Street.

Loftus was charged with first-degree assault, risk of injury to a minor, interfering with an officer, conspiracy to commit interfering with an officer, violation of probation, third-degree burglary, first-degree larceny, theft of a firearm and conspiracy to commit a false statement.

He is being held on a $150,000 bond and is scheduled to appear in Middlesex Superior Court on Friday.

Dorothy was arrested Tuesday and was charged with risk of injury, providing a false statement, conspiracy to commit a false statement, interfering with an officer and conspiracy to interfere with an officer.

She was held in jail on $100,000 bond and is scheduled to appear in court again on March 12.
