A mother from Manchester was arrested Wednesday after police said she locked her 1-year-old and 3-year-old children in a cold car while she shoplifted from a store.

Police were called to Evergreen Walk in South Windsor after security from Gap Kids called to tell them they apprehended a shoplifter inside the store.

When officers arrived, they said they learned Shamerra Canty, 26, of Manchester, had locked her children inside the car in the parking lot.

Police said the car was not running and wasn't supplying a heat source for the children, and it was 34 degrees outside.

Officers made arrangements for relatives of the children to come get them while Canty was arrested and brought to jail.

She was charged with risk of injury to a minor and larceny. She was released on $5,000 bond and was expected to appear in court on Feb. 28.
