Cool and breezy weekend ahead

Posted: Updated:
PHOENIX (CBS5) -

Say goodbye to the sunshine and temperatures in the 70s. Winds are starting to pick up ahead of a storm system that will move across Arizona late tonight and tomorrow.

Expect sustained winds up to 20 mph for the next couple of days in the Valley and much windier conditions across Northern Arizona. In fact, a wind advisory has been issued by the National Weather Service through this evening. Southwest winds should sustain between 25-35 mph. Expect wind gusts up to 50 mph.

Along with the breezy conditions, cooler air will start to filter into the Valley. Highs across the Phoenix Metro area will only warm up into the upper 60s today. As this low pressure slides across the state, even cooler temperatures are expected on Saturday. Temperatures will only reach the upper 50s on Saturday and Sunday. Overnight lows will be chilly, in the 30s. In the coldest locations, temperatures could drop to around freezing.

This storm system will not have a lot of moisture associated with it, but parts of the Valley will more than likely get some light scattered showers late tonight or early Saturday morning.  Totals will not be too impressive.

Widespread snow will fall across Northern Arizona - good news for skiers and snowboarders. A winter weather advisory has been issued by the National Weather Service that will go into effect at 11 p.m. Up to 4 inches will fall in the lower elevations and up to 7 inches in the higher terrain.

There still is a chance of showers later in the day on Saturday and for the rest of the weekend, but chances will be slim.

Highs will hover in the upper 50s on Sunday and Monday. A gradual warm up will take place by the middle of the week. A developing high pressure system will bring sunshine at least through Thursday.

We may have to wait a little longer for fall to arrive in Arizona, but when it does, it's AMAZING. And that includes the fall colors. Yes, even in Arizona we get those reds, golds and yellows. It just takes a little bit of a road trip from the Valley to find them.
