Greasy burglar steals $10,000 in jewelry from Vancouver homePosted: Updated: Jan 27, 2013 10:43 PM
A burglar got away with thousands of dollars in jewelry from a Vancouver home and left behind a greasy trail of evidence.
Kathy Roth said she came home from church Sunday afternoon and discovered someone had broken in.
The burglar broke the window next to the front door, reached in and unlocked the deadbolt.
"They tried to get into the safe but it's pretty well foolproof," said Roth as she showed FOX 12 where the thief rummaged through her office looking for a key.
The crook was unable to crack the safe, so they moved on to the kitchen.
"They walked through here," Roth said, pointing to a path of greasy footprint stains on her white carpet. "They left a trail."
Roth said the burglar didn't take any of the family's expensive electronics like the TV or computer. She said detectives told her those items can be easily tracked by serial numbers if they are sold to a pawn shop.
The burglar took something even more valuable. Roth said they stole more than $10,000 in jewelry from her bedroom.
"They emptied my dresser completely," she said. "They took everything out of my jewelry box."
Roth said police told her the stolen jewelry will be hard to recover and there's a chance she won't get it back.
"They probably took it to a gold place that you just take scrap in," she said. "They weigh it, you get cash and it's gone. It's melted down and never seen again."
Roth said the burglary took place sometime between 12:30 p.m. and 2:30 p.m. Sunday.
She isn't sure who broke in but she believes it may be someone who is familiar with the family's schedule.
The home does have a security system but it wasn't turned on when the crime took place.
